The Research Institute of Petroleum Industry, also known as NIOC-RIPI, often shortened to RIPI ((ペルシア語:پژوهشگاه صنعت نفت)) is a governmental research institute founded in 1959 in Tehran, Iran and is affiliated with National Iranian Oil Company. The institute is a major research institute in Iran and is the largest of its kind in the Middle East. Throughout the years from its establishment, RIPI underwent many transformations in its research and development activities and has become a major technology provider for Iran’s petroleum industry. In 2002, it developed a revolutionary new technology that converts heavy crude oil into the more desirable, a new generation of GTL technology.〔(World Intelectual Property Organization's website, visited February 13, 2013. )〕 ==History== The institute was established in 1959 with the name "NIOC bureau for development and research" ((ペルシア語:اداره توسعه و تحقیقات شرکت ملی نفت ایران)). The mission of the bureau was basically limited to the research and development in the applications of petrochemical materials. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, the organization was first renamed to "the Center for Research and Scientific Services" ((ペルシア語:مرکز پژوهش و خدمات علمی)) and then in 1990 with a major rebuilding of missions, to the current name "Research Institute of Petroleum Industry". The activities were then dramatically upgraded to fundamental, applied and developmental research in oil, natural gas and petro-chemistry.
